Reading

I love to read. I love escaping to other worlds and experiences. I love vocabulary and how it is used to convey meaning. I love how it gives me structures and ideas to help me write in all kinds of ways.  I teach fun and interactive reading lessons with a focus on engagement and immersion in the text, whatever its level. I want to encourage children of all ages to read for enjoyment and to see the benefits of this.

Learning to read is a journey of discovery, a gateway to understanding and one of life’s most important skills. It begins with the building blocks of phonics and decoding new words. which I teach using a variety of games focusing on repetition and accuracy. Reading fluency can then be built to encourage a certain speed to aid with understanding meaning.  Finally, at all levels of reading, comprehension is key to understanding. So we will dive into text analysis, discovering the uses of vocabulary and grammar for effect and purpose. These skills are intrinsic to success in the KS2 SATS and 11+ examinations.

All these aspects of reading are taught in exciting and innovative ways to promote engagement and grow confidence. Whatever, the age of your child or their ability and experience of reading to date, I would love to excite them about the endless adventure reading can be.

Writing

Being able to express your ideas in writing is a sought after skill in todays society. The written word takes so many interesting forms and during my sessions we will discover many; tailoring ideas to your child’s individual needs.

 Woven throughout will be a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar; all taught using interactive activities and games to enable understanding and appropriate use of these often confusing elements of writing. We will unpick, experiment and have fun with them all so that they become important and necessary tools to use to create masterpieces they can be proud of.

ESL

As an accredited TEFL teacher, I understand that learning English as a second language can often be difficult and needs a specific approach. My sessions would be tailored to your child’s language starting point and built around lots of fun and engaging games and activities to bring the language alive and make it accessible. Sessions would cover the areas of: vocabulary, grammar, speaking, reading, listening and writing and the variety of techniques and resources I use will help to increase understanding rapidly.
